Glasses make or break your look. Get it right and you’ll turn heads, get it wrong and you won’t be noticed at all.
And key to finding that special, stylish pair of specs that really suit you is to pick a set of frames that compliment your face shape.
Once you know what looks good on you, there’s no more trying on every pair in town feeling ever more frustrated and despondent.
Instead, you can go straight to the styles that are right for you and pick from them.
But first you have to know which styles suit your face shape (and, indeed, what face shape you are).
Luckily Bloobloom – the UK’s fastest growing online eyewear brand – has come up with a handy guide to help you.
A fitting pair: Finding the prefect glasses for your face shape is easy, just follow Blooblooms guide (Left: Believer in Midnight, Right: Fiancé in Sunrise)
That’s not the only way they help either because all their glasses are both ethically made and climate neutral too. And they won’t break the bank – prices start at just £95 including prescription lenses.
What’s more, Bloobloom’s Home Try On service lets you order five different frames free for five days so you can be sure you’ve chosen the pair that’s right for you.
But first, how do you narrow it down to five frames? Try following their face shape guide….
Help! What's my face shape?
There are four main face shapes: heart, round, square and oval. To find out which is you, scrape all your hair back and take a good look in the mirror. Most of the time it’s quite clear.
Now you see me! Figuring out which face shape you have just requires a long look in the mirror (Parisian in Crystal)
Top tip: Draw the outline of your face's reflection to get a more objective view of its shape (Soulmate in Nude)
But if you still can’t decide, grab a lippy or eyeliner and draw around the outline of your face on the mirror. Stand back, look at your drawing and the mystery should be solved. (Now wipe it off or you’ll be in trouble).
A heart-shaped face is widest at the cheekbones and tapers down to a delicate, pointed chin. Square, on the other hand, is wide both at the forehead and the jawline.
Oval and round can be difficult to tell apart as both have wide cheekbones and rounded jawlines. But in ovals, faces are longer than they are wide whereas a round face is (perhaps obviously!) remarkably circular.
So, what glasses are going to look great?
Now you know your face shape, it’s time to find out which frames will look cool on you or should be frozen out completely.
Now the fun part: Once you've discovered your shape, you can get browsing the dozens of styles, available in a range of colours and materials (Creator in Black)
To make it even easier, Bloobloom’s website has a nifty filter that lets you select certain styles like cats-eye so you don’t even have to work it out for yourself.
But let’s get started:
A great rule of thumb for all face shapes is to go for the opposite when choosing frames for glasses. So soften the angles of a square face with rounded frames like Bloobloom’s elegantly exquisite Traveller or really open your eyes out with a beautifully bold cats-eye frame like Ballerina. And while it might not seem right, don’t be scared to go for strong frames like those of Mentor – they can give your look real definition and edge.
Round glasses will only emphasise your circular face (although it can be done – check out the delicate Daydreamer) so try something more boxy or rectangular like the fearsome Founder. Despite your face being the polar opposite to square, cats-eyes will suit you too –why not go full-on with the fabulously flamboyant Idol?
If this is you – you’ve hit the specs jackpot! Welcome to choosing almost any pair you like – yours is a face shape that can take them all. Picking a cats-eye or square frame like the ones above will emphasise those gorgeous cheekbones of yours. And even the roundest of frames – such as the sensational Stargazer – will have you looking like a supermodel: just makes sure they’re not too small or narrow.
If you’re all heart (shaped), you’ve also got a world of choice but balancing out the pointiness of your chin with a more angular frame (hello Dancer!) can help turn eyes in your direction. Experiment with cats-eyes, round frames and thin rims for a fabulously distinctive look but beware semi-rimmed specs – they’re no heart-shaped face’s friend!
Ethical, economical and fashionable: Bloobloom are a brand with a purpose (Fiancé in Tobacco)
Behind Bloobloom are two brothers - Fares and Abbas Manai – who, after a decade in banking, both realised they needed a new challenge and one that had a positive impact on people’s lives.
So when they learned a staggering 2.5 billion people in the world don’t have access to specs, their path was clear: create an eyewear company that can help correct the problem.
In 2018, Bloobloom was born and central to the brothers’ vision was their ‘Pair for Pair’ scheme and, to this day, for every set of glasses sold, they donate a pair overseas (currently to Rwanda although more countries are soon set to benefit).
Two brothers with a vision for... well, vision! Fares and Abbas Manai set up the brand to help improve access to eyewear (Londoner in Diorite)
But that’s not the only thing that makes this new-kid-on-the-eyeware-block so different. Their transparency and environmental credentials are challenging other firms to be more open about their business practices.
Because not only are Bloobloom climate neutral certified, on their website you’ll find the details of the factories they use to make their glasses and also the actual cost of each pair.
That’s not the amount you pay – that’s the amount they pay the manufacturer. So you know just how much profit they’re making with every sale.
For many businesses, it would be pure madness. But with Bloobloom, it’s just a way of proving their commitment to ethical trading.
