Throw on a jacket and grab your sunglasses before you head out the door Monday. I'm tracking fall-like weather ahead for today, but we'll be feeling more summer-like mid week. Another substantial cooling trend and a chance for showers are then ahead in your longer range extended forecast.
You'll probably want to throw on pants, a light jacket, and make sure you have your sunglasses handy before you head out the door Monday. We've had clear skies over most of northern California overnight, but clouds have increased closer to the coast as a cool system closes in on the West Coast from the Pacific. That system is leaving us with average to slightly above average temperatures, mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies, and modest winds in your forecast on Monday. We also have a strong ridge of high pressure to our northeast that's limiting how much cloud cover will move inland, and that will also keep us dry. We have clear skies over the majority of our region this morning, but we'll end up mostly sunny today. We'll be partly cloudy in the Northern Mountains. Temperatures have dipped into the 40's to mid 50's in the valley and foothills, while our mountain zones range from the upper 20's to lower 40's to start the day. Winds are out of the northeast in the 5 to 10mph range early today, and then they'll stay out of the north in the 5 to 10mph range in the afternoon. Humidity has recovered well overnight, and will only dip into the 25 to 50 percent range today. High temperatures are projected to end up slightly warmer than they did on Sunday, and will mostly be on par or slightly above average for this time of year. Valley areas will top out in the 70's to mid 80's, while foothill areas end up in the 60's to mid 70's, and our mountain zones mostly end up in the 70's later today. Temperatures will trend down pretty quickly again this evening, so you'll probably want to keep that extra layer handy if you'll be out and about after sunset.
Low pressure off the coast will track south to become centered off the coast of southern California from Tuesday into Wednesday, and high pressure to our northeast will rebuild westward across our region. That will drive warming temperatures and clearing skies from Tuesday into Wednesday. We'll be sunny to mostly sunny, and have high temperatures 5 to 10 degrees warmer than Monday on Tuesday. Valley areas will end up in the mid to upper 80's on Tuesday and then in the low to mid 90's under sunny skies on Wednesday. Foothill areas will top out in the 70's on Tuesday, and 70's to mid 80's on Wednesday. Mountain areas will climb into the 70's to lower 80's on Tuesday, and then 70's to mid 80's on Wednesday. Low pressure tracking south from the Gulf of Alaska from Thursday into this weekend will then drive a welcome cooling trend in your extended forecast, but we'll still be fairly toasty on Thursday. Projections have valley areas still topping out in the 80's to lower 90's on Thursday, but then trending down into the mid to upper 80's under mostly sunny skies on Friday. Foothill areas will end up in the 70's to lower 80's on Thursday and then 70's on Friday, while our mountain zones are in the 70's to lower 80's Thursday and 70's on Friday.
Low pressure will continue tracking south from the Pacific Northwest into the Great Basin as we head into this weekend, and that will drive even cooler temperatures and the potential for some showers across northern California Saturday. Best chance for showers will stay in our higher elevations. That system will then track further east on Sunday, and will leave us with clearing skies and the potential for gusty north winds. The gusty winds will be a concern for fire danger if they do develop. Temperatures are projected to dip into the 40's to mid 50's and mostly top out in the low to mid 70's in the valley this weekend. Foothill areas will start out in the 50's to low 60's and top out in the 60's, while our mountain areas start out in the 30's and end up in the 60's this weekend.
