In commemoration of World Sight Day, the Ikeja Viva L’Amour Lions Club has dedicated its humanitarian services for the month of October, also known as the vision month, to the students of Immaculate Heart Comprehensive Junior High School, Maryland, Lagos.

At the event, a total of 100 students were freely screened and drugs administered to them. Free glasses will also be given out to those whose eyes were infected. The club invited three optometrists to carry out the screening and tests.

Judith Akapo, president of the club, admitted that World Sight Day is a global event, saying they were out as a club to render selfless and relentless services to their communities and that Immaculate Heart Comprehensive Junior High School, Maryland, fell within their jurisdiction.

“We advise people not to neglect caring for their eyes because it is an essential organ in their body and the light of the body. If you neglect them, it is possible that you can have some life-threatening diseases such as glaucoma, cataract and eventual blindness.

“In order to avoid such situations, we always advise people to have their eyes tested and taken care of once in every two years for children and once in a year for adults. By doing so, at least you will have healthy eyes and clear vision.”

She thanked government of Lagos State, the Education Ministry’s officer in-charge, all the students and management of the school for giving them the opportunity to serve them.

Dr. Kelechi Onyedi, one of the optometrists invited to the event, disclosed that from the results gotten from the tests and screening, a lot of students in the school had one or two eye conditions/disorders which had not been taken care of.

Onyedi delivered a brief talk to the students which he titled ‘Preventing and Managing Eye Conditions’ in which he explained to them that they don’t need to wait to have eye problems before going for tests.

He disclosed that there were so many eye diseases that affect the eyes without showing any form of symptoms. “That is why you need to have your eyes checked, once every two years, as children,” he said.
