His Collection 10 was inspired by Prince and The New Power Generation
Fashion designer Sergio Hudson is having one heck of a month.
Serena Williams wore a slinky pale blue Sergio Hudson slip dress on the September 2022 issue of Vogue magazine. And on Saturday, he presented his Collection 10 runway show at The Léman Ballroom in New York City with a collection of boldface names in the audience and on the runway.
Veronica Webb, the first Black supermodel to be the face of a major beauty campaign, walked the runway wearing a leather, suede and velvet bustier over a black turtleneck, with black riding pants, and over-the-knee boots.
Chanel Iman first appeared on the runway wearing a cobalt blue cocktail dress with a sweetheart neckline, and she returned in the last look of the collection: a graphic black and white slip dress with a keyhole in front. And Issa Rae wore that same slip dress fresh off the runway to the 2022 Emmy Awards on Monday night.
Leomie Anderson modeled a black turtleneck, paired with a graphic black leather, suede and velvet pencil skirt, and a lime-green coat cropped at the hip. Maria Borges removed her white overcoat on the runway to reveal a white jumpsuit with a center keyhole, a white wide belt fastened at the waist, and white over-the-knee boots.
Winnie Harlow wore a monochrome look: two-textured lime-green suit with a matching brassiere and Malone Souliers stilettos. Sessilee Lopez came out of retirement, walking the runway in a shawl-collar black and white coat with a black jumpsuit underneath, a wide black belt fastened at the waist.

And Kimora Lee Simmons’ youngest daughter, Aoki Lee Simmons, took to the runway in a Barbie-pink double-breasted suit with sharp shoulders. Her hair was piled high on her head, with a long, thick tendril hanging in the front.
If the sharp, angular shoulder pads were any indication 1980s fashion is back, the runway models wearing sheer hose cemented it. But these aren’t your grandmother’s pantyhose. On Hudson’s runway it is somehow sexier and cooler.
“I wanted to do something that was beautiful, bold, and overtly glamorous and sexy, while still maintaining a clean and modern feel,” Hudson said in a press release after the show.
In a press release for the collection, Hudson said he was inspired by singer Prince and The New Power Generation. His latest collection introduced new techniques to create leather, suede and velvet jackets, evening gowns and skirts, building off of his previous collection’s punchy color-coordinated outfits.
Collection 10 included black and white cocktail dresses, slip dresses in jewel tones worn with matching overcoats, animal print gowns, colorblocked suiting in the collection’s standout colors cobalt blue, terra-cotta, chartreuse and royal purple.
The day after Hudson showed his idea of power dressing, Hudson announced the launch of his Collection 9 on Luxury Stores at Amazon, making his collection available to Amazon Prime members.
“Sergio Hudson’s collection is the definition of brazen elegance: classic silhouettes rendered in head-swerving hues, all finely tailored and highly polished,” Muge Erdirik Dogan, president of Amazon Fashion, said in a press release.

In January 2021, former first lady Michelle Obama walked into President Biden’s swearing-in ceremony wearing a sharply-tailored wine-colored pantsuit Hudson designed.
In 2013, Hudson was competing on Styled to Rock, Rihanna’s short-lived TV show on Bravo. He beat out 11 designers to win the competition. He made his New York Fashion Week debut two years later.
His celebrity clientele includes Beyoncé, Issa Rae, Tracee Ellis Ross — and if his Collection 10 front row was any indication — rapper Latto, TV talk show host Sherri Shepherd, P-Valley’s Shannon Thornton, WNBA player Charli Collier, The Gilded Age’s Denée Benton, and (Harris’ niece) Meena Harris, Hudson is designing for every woman.
And the Jodeci song playing through the speakers as Hudson’s guests spilled out into New York’s financial district after the show indicated — I can’t leave you alone — the feeling for what Hudson showed on the runway is mutual.
