Catherine Cole (113) and Brendan Summers (92) sprint toward the uphill finish line last year at the inaugural Camp Spirit 5Kin Black Diamond. Organizers are gearing up for the second annual event, which will be Saturday, Nov. 5.

For many years, Camp E-Nini-Hassee had two yearly events to raise funds for extras that the girls need — eyeglasses and ACT tests, Christmas gifts — as well as everyday personal care items, bras and underwear.

Every fall was the well-attended spaghetti dinner, and every spring was the fish fry.

When the coronavirus pandemic hit, these events were canceled.

Last year, 2021, Heather Cogar, an alumna of E-Nini-Hassee, suggested doing a 5K run, something different to raise funds.

The Camp Spirit 5K Run and 1 Mile Walk at Black Diamond Ranch was born and more than 170 runners and walkers participated.

This year, the second annual Camp Spirit 5K Run and 1 Mile Walk is Saturday, Nov. 5, at Black Diamond Ranch in Lecanto.

The public is invited to enjoy the beautiful course through Black Diamond Ranch, a private, gated golf community.

All participants will receive a custom finisher medal, event shirt and commemorative bib. Plenty of food and drinks post-race.

All proceeds from this event will go directly to Eckerd Connects Camp E-Nini-Hassee.

“We encourage runners or walkers of all ages to participate in this nonprofit charity opportunity,” said Heather Cogar, event chairwoman. Those wishing to participate can register for the event at drcsports.com or https://runsignup.com/Race/FL/Lecanto/CampSpirit5K.

There are still open spots available for sponsors if individuals or businesses would like to participate or donate to our program. Those wishing to sponsor or donate can call Cogar at 352-445-6392.

In addition to the need for participants, sponsors and donors, Cogar said volunteers are also needed. Those interested in volunteering please text (don’t call) Rebecca Schmalstig at 352-212-2553.

The race is organized by DRC Sports, 352-637-2475/info@drcsports.com.
