“Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” is continuing to break Netflix records, as it’s now been revealed that the limited series, which premiered just three weeks ago, has now become the second most-watched English language show on the streaming platform. According to reports, with viewing figures having surpassed a colossal 700 million hours by curious subscribers, the Ryan Murphy-created show has officially dethroned “Bridgerton” in numbers.
“Monster,” which depicts the true-life events of former Milwaukee serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, who murdered 17 men and underage boys between 1978 and 1991, gained widespread popularity thanks to the countless memes and viral discussions on Twitter, which seemingly helped the series attract even more curious viewers. A central talking point on social media has been the fact that Dahmer would not only sexually assault his victims after they were killed, but he’d also eat some of their body parts, as depicted on the show.

Despite the incredible success “Monster” has had on Netflix, some family members of the victims have spoken out, saying they believed the company’s only intent to retell the Dahmer story was to exploit the horrific crime and profit off a unforgettable tragedy.
One particular scene in the show sees Rita Isbell, who is the older sister of Errol Lindsey, the 19-year-old who was killed by Dahmer, speak in an outraged manner at the infamous 1992 trial where she demonstrated what it meant to be out of control, a term Dahmer’s lawyers used in defense of his despicable murders.
A family member, believed to be the cousin of Rita and Lindsey, went viral with his tweet – having attracted over 400k likes – as he claimed that his relatives were being “retraumatized” as he questioned how many more shows and documentaries one needed to understand that this series was clearly not needed.

In fairness, outside of the Netflix series, there have been a dozen documentaries about the life and death of Dahmer. In regards to the release of “Monster,” the Twitter user @ericthulu said, “I’m not telling anyone what to watch, I know true crime media is huge right now, but if you’re actually curious about the victims, my family (the Isbells) are p****d about this show.”
After the tweet had went viral, he continued to stress that his family won’t be watching “Monster,” nor were they in support of the story being rehashed on the streaming platform.
