Blue Cross Blue Shield is offering free eye exams for elementary and middle school students through its FEP Vision care program for federal employees.

The free screening, expected to take five minutes, will determine whether children need glasses.

Children must be in second grade through sixth grade to qualify for a free screening, but there are no other requirements. A parent or guardian must accompany them to the appointment.

"We hope more young children will be able to access this free healthcare opportunity, especially at this critical time as they start a new school year," an organizer said.

Families are encouraged to schedule annual eye exams for children with vision problems and every two years for children without vision problems.
